Long Hollow Dude Ranch Vacations

For all Dude Ranch Vacations please call us directly at 541-923-1901.

Dude Ranch vacations are what we really love to do here. We invite you to come on over and experience the magic of a traditional, yet modern working, cattle and hay ranch. It’s a great way to get away from it all and and enjoy gorgeous scenery. Sunrise, sunsets and the night skies are spectacular here. Enjoy good company as you sit around the table sharing conversation with guests from around the world.

Trail riding is the heart and soul of a dude (guest) ranch vacation. Let’s talk about what trail riding really is; from time to time we have had guests who were disappointed that they were not able to run fast or gallop their horse here at Long Hollow.

First of all, the terrain in our part of Oregon tends to be rocky and uneven with occasional animal burrows on the surface of the ground. This makes running or galloping dangerous for the horse as well as the rider. Second, the Dude Ranchers’ Association, of which Long Hollow is a certified member, recommends that we not run fast or gallop our horses during trail rides.

Finally, part of the enjoyment of a trail ride is the peacefulness and scenic beauty surrounding the riders. For all those reasons our rides are at a walk, and our guests generally appreciate the leisurely pace which allows them to relax and enjoy their surroundings and take pictures of the breathtaking scenery. Our trails go through some wooded areas, near ponds, and up to the higher terrain where the beautiful peaks of the Cascade Range can be seen.

At Long Hollow Ranch the horses are very well cared for; they are fed and exercised regularly, and their ground manners and riding manners are consistantly work on for improvment. As much as possible, guests are matched with a horse that suits their riding ability. Inexperienced riders are coached before their first ride to be sure they are comfortable and capable before leaving the arena. Incidentally, children under six do not go on the trails, but they can be ponied in the arena.

Dude Ranch Weekly Activities

Because of unpredictable weather conditions there may be some variations, but a typical summer week will look something like this:

Sunday: Check in any time after 3:00 PM. Settle in to your comfortable room, relax with lemonade or iced tea, stroll the grounds. A light supper is served at 6 PM, after which guests can get acquainted with each other and the ranch in general.

Monday: Start the day with a hearty breakfast at 8 AM and then you are off to meet your horse at the barn. Take a turn in the arena till you’re comfortable, and then enjoy a morning trail ride on the ranch. After lunch your wrangler will share some useful and insightful instruction about natural horsemanship and how a horse thinks. This will provide you with a good foundation for better horsemanship and more enjoyable riding.

Tuesday: Rides go out in the morning and afternoon. The  afternoon ride may be shortened to allow for a trip to Smith Rock State Park, an iconic rock climbing and hiking site in a rocky river canyon. We will the return back to LHR for a delicious dinner.

Wednesday : Following your morning ride you will pick your”to go” lunch and head out to experience a half-day of rafting on the beautiful McKenzie River. This event is included in your Dude Ranch package of four or more days. A full-day trip is available for additional fee. LHR provides a to-go lunch for the trip.

Thursday: You can do riding or groundwork with the horses after breakfast. After lunch you will be escorted you to a local point of interest (which varies according to demand). Central Oregon is rich in scenic sites as well as many interesting events and activities.

Friday: This morning’s ride will be followed by a picnic lunch along the way. Later we may do something fun with  cattle. After-dinner dessert will be served at the hot tub or fire pit, depending on weather conditions.

Saturday: After a short farewell ride at 8 AM, brunch will be served from the Amish wagon by the garden pergola. There will be plenty of time to clean up, say good-bye to your new friends and prepare for your departure.

Contact us for more information, and to inquire about other activities to plan during your stay, including one of our cattle drives.
